~ a place I call my own…

Imeldific

MIL and I just finished watching Imelda. It’s a documentary film about Imelda Marcos, wife of the late Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos. The documentary attempts to chronicle the life of one of the world’s richest and most powerful women from a variety of viewpoints (both pro and con), including that of the notorious first lady herself.

Her childhood friend mentioned on the film that Ferdinand Marcos was very controlling of Imelda. He controlled how much she eats and what she wears until she can no longer stand it and got seriously ill. Then the doctor told Ferdinand that if he wants her to stay alive, he needs to quit politics because Imelda can no longer stand all the pressures. Ferdinand complied but Imelda realized that if her husband can give up his ultimate dream of becoming a politician, why can’t she give up something for him? So that’s what she did. She stopped being shy, went out and reached out to the Filipino people. And the rest is history.

Well, if I have a husband who dictates me what to eat and what to wear or how many laps I should do on the treadmills, I would definitely get sick as well. Good thing my husband is not a dictator. He lets me be myself and lets me do my own thing. But then, I’m not like Imelda who has an obligation to reach out to all the Filipinos. Ambisyosa! LOL!
